What to Expect
Preparing for Surgery
- Follow all pre-surgery instructions regarding eating and drinking before your procedure.
- Follow all instructions on which medications should be taken with a small sip of water on the morning of your surgery.
- Consult your physician regarding stopping any blood thinners (such as Coumadin, Plavix, or Aspirin). These products may need to be stopped 5 to7 days before surgery.
- Wear loose, comfortable, easy-to-remove clothing, as you will be changing into a gown at the center.
- Bring your driver’s license or other form of identification, insurance card(s), and a current list of medications, including dosages and frequency.
- Leave all valuables, including jewelry, at home.
- Ensure that you have an adult support person who can drive you home after your procedure. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with proof of guardianship.
The Day of Surgery
- Arrive at the specified time.
- Free parking is available, with signage directing you to the surgery center entrance.
- Sign in at the registration desk, and a receptionist will assist with your check-in.
- A nurse will take you to the preoperative area to prepare for surgery. Your support person can join you during this time.
- You will meet the anesthesiologist to review your health history, conduct a brief exam, and discuss the anesthesia plan. A surgical nurse will then take you to the operating room.
After Surgery
- After surgery, the surgeon will speak with your support person. Nurses will monitor you until you are ready to go home.
- Once you meet the discharge criteria, the nurse will review your home care instructions with you and your support person. We recommend that an adult stay with you for the night following your procedure.
- A nurse will follow up with you the next business day to check on your recovery and address any questions.
- For emergencies after hours, contact your surgeon, go to the nearest emergency room, or dial 911.

Ames Surgery Center is a multi-specialty outpatient facility offering cost-effective, same-day surgical procedures. Opened in 2024 as a joint venture between Mary Greeley Medical Center and McFarland Clinic, we are conveniently located on North Dayton Avenue in Ames, Iowa, near Interstate 35 and Highway 30. Our center specializes in gastroenterology, general surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, urology, and more.
